A new kitchen is a big investment. Follow these steps to plan a kitchen that works for your family and runs smoothly from start to finish.
1. Start with how you use the space
Before looking at cabinet colours, think about how you cook, eat and live. Do you need a large island, room for a dining table, or space for children to do homework? Your answers shape the layout.
2. Set a realistic budget
Remember that a kitchen budget covers much more than units and worktops. Allow for appliances, plumbing, electrics, plastering, flooring, lighting and a contingency of around 10% for anything unexpected.
3. Get the layout right
Keep the sink, hob and fridge within easy reach of each other, leave enough space between runs of units, and plan plenty of sockets and good task lighting.
4. Consider structural changes early
If you want to knock through to a dining room or add an extension, this needs to be planned first. Removing walls may need a structural engineer and building control approval.
5. Plan the sequence of work
A typical kitchen installation follows this order:
- Strip-out of the old kitchen
- First fix plumbing and electrics
- Plastering
- Flooring (where it goes under the units)
- Fitting units, worktops and appliances
- Second fix, tiling and decorating
